Caption	Recruits arrive at the training center and are lined up before Boatswain Mate (first class ) J. S. Schiro, the figure in the center. It's quite a different scene from that of other days when Houston girls tripped up the steps of the clubhouse and became a part of brillant social gatherings ; Chief Boatswain Mate E. R. Harris, training station commander. A veteran with 26 years' service behind him, he directs training of recruits who, after three to five weeks of drill and study, are expected to be fit for Coast Guard assignment with a unit in any part of the world ; Coxswain Carl Couret instructs recruits in the proper way to moor a boat. Yacht Club boat-owning members, their predecessors, acquired the same technique through experience ; Chow time in always welcome. Food is excellent and plentiful and the boys dig into it with gusto ; Instructor John Durning, seaman first class, contacts another unit off shore by semaphore. Every recruit must be familiar with the international flag code and master the Morse code as well before he is qualified for sea duty ; At left: Each recruit must serve a tour of guard duty. Leroy Arnes, at the left, is being relieved at his post by Recruit Clarence Bammel of Houston, fireman third class, and according to regulations, they exchange orders ; Relaxation time with dominoes, bridge, or what have you. Maybe there's a pair of dice hiden somewhere. Who could say? ; Yacht Club ground never before experienced anything like this. Boatswain Mate Schiro trains a class in handling a submachine gun ; In addition to being his own chambermaid, a recruit must do his own laundry work. All it requries, it was cynically explained to Photographer Gibson, is considerable "elbow grease" and some soap.
