Caption	All steel used in Hughes Tools must meet specification. Steel shipments are unloaded on these racks and each bar and billet is spark tested for carbon content and chemically tested for alloy elements. The Spark Testing Machine shown in fore-ground is equipped with grinder wheel for throwing sparks by which the experienced eye of the inspector can determine the carbon content of the steel from the shape and appearance of the spark. The steel is then marked with identifying colors. This procedure insures against error of steel manufacture and avoids any confusion of specifications after unloading in the Hughes Plant.
