Abstract |
Born in D'Lo, Simpson County, Mississippi, on September 26, 1910, Nathaniel "Bill" Barnes was born with the gift of singing. Despite having no formal education in reading or writing music, Barnes could sing songs after hearing other perform. He was raised on a farm in Mississippi until 1939, when he came to Houston. Barnes and his friends organized a quartet called the "Vistula Four" and sang gospels at churches. Barnes loved singing gospels and the blues. While working various jobs in Houston, Barnes sang on the radio (KTRH) and played at various places. |
