Lobit, Mrs. Louis |
Abstract |
Mrs. Louis Lobit (ne Elva Mae Stephens) was born in 1900. She came to Houston in 1927 where she worked as a photographer until her marriage to Louis Lobit in 1943. Mrs. Lobit was also a singer and dedicated much of her time to the fine arts. In this interview Mrs. Lobit discusses her role as one on the three founding members of the Houston Grand Opera. Founded in 1955, Mrs. Lobit served as the Houston Grand Opera’s first president and helped to oversee the rapid growth of the company during its early years. Her involvement included establishing the Opera Guild, setting the mission and goals of the institution, and working to foster a wider interest in opera throughout city. There are numerous antidotes about various productions and the quirks of some of the performers who appeared in Houston over the years. Mrs. Lobit also elaborates on her involvement as a charter member of the Society of the Performing Arts, the founding of the Music Guild (chamber music), her association with the Tuesday Musical Club, and the roles of herself and Mr. Lobit as members and sponsors of the Houston Symphony. |
