Mrs

Ray
Dudley
was
born
in
Georgia
in
1896
. Her
family
came
to
Houston
when
her
father
became
the
minister
of the
First
Baptist
Church
. She
attended
Baylor
University
and
met
her
husband
Ray
L
.
Dudley
. In
1917
,
Mr
.
Dudley
,
became
editor
of the
Gulf
Coast
Oil
News
because
he
felt
an
oil
journal
would be
profitable
. As the
oil
industry
expanded
,
coverage
of the
different
branches
within
the
oil
business
was
needed
and the
company
created
specialized
publications
to the
industry
. In
1918
, the
journal's
name
was
changed
to
Oil
Weekly
and the
company
created
the
magazines
,
Pipeline
Industry
and The
Refiner
. The
company
grew
over
the
years
and in
1953
,
reorganized
with
separate
printing
and
publishing
divisions
.
Mrs
.
Dudley
became
an
active
officer
in the
company
after
her
husband's
death
. In her
interview
,
Mrs
.
Dudley
provides
some
insight
on the
early
business
structure
of the
paper
. She also
discusses
her
husband's
view
on
strong
editorial
policy
,
sound
citizenship
of his
employees
,
truthfulness
in
reporting
, and
government
regulations
.
