Abstract |
Augustin Villagomez came to Houston in the 1920s. His first job was in the V.A. Hospital, working as an Order for cleaning rooms for 38 cents per hour. After saving some money, he went to Morelia to marry his girlfriend, Anavelia Rivera. They had 3 children and faced a lot of hardship. In 1940, he got his U.S. citizenship and found a job at the Lone Star Cement Plant, breaking concrete with a sledge hammer for 8 hours. He worked there for 33 years. Then he retired and returned to Mexico. Augustin relates the poverty and the hardship faced in the Depression era. |
