Abstract
Nina
Cullinan
was
born
in
Washington
,
Pennsylvania
in
1899.She
grew
up
in
Houston
and
attended
Houston
public
schools
. Her
father
had a
strong
interest
in
visual
arts
and
travel
. He would
take
his
children
to
visit
museums
in
all
the
places
they
visited
.
After
college
,
Nina
followed
her
family
tradition
of
actively
participating
in
civic
life
. She was
involved
in
many
volunteer
programs
. She was a
founding
member
of the
Contemporary
Arts
Museum
,
Society
for
Performing
Arts
, and the
Houston
Ballet
Foundation
. In
1950
, she
funded
the
building
of the
Cullinan
Hall
of the
Museum
of
Fine
Arts.She
was a
member
Chairman
of the
Museum
of
Fine
Arts
from
1938-1941
. Her
volunteer
efforts
and
philanthropy
extended
to
other
areas
of
civic
life
,
becoming
member
of the
Boards
of
Child
Guidance
Center
, the
Houston
Mental
Health
Society
, and the
National
Parks
Association
. She was
aptly
honored
for her
contributions
and
donations
by
Mayor
Kathy
J
.
Whitmire
in
1982
. At her
death
, she
willed
4
million
to the
Houston
Parks
Board
for the
development
of
new
park
space
.
