Henry Maresh was a local supervisor of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) project researching the history of Houston. The researchers combed through all available documentation, including extant newspapers, previously published books, and legal records, and extracted factual items of significance and transcribed them. These files, which were the result of the project, were filed, indexed, and compiled into short topical essays, which eventually formed the basis of the published WPA Guides to Houston, Texas, and Galveston.
