About this collection

The Northside History Collaborative was formed in 2015 to capture the voices of Greater Northside residents. Northside is a historic community located near downtown Houston. In 2016, the project developed into “Stories of the Northside” and expanded to the Northline area. This oral history effort is a collaborative partnership between the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC), Avenue, and the University of Houston-Downtown.

Interviews are conducted in the homes of Northside residents and Greater Northside institutions, such as the Carnegie Neighborhood Library and Center for Learning. Each year a short film is created to showcase the voices in each interview and is then presented to the community. All interviews and films become part of the HMRC’s Oral History Collection. Recordings such as these offer generations of Houstonians a better understanding of the historical development of our city and our communities.
