Oral History Spotlight: Jazz Appreciation Month

The Oral History Collection at HMRC contains over 1,500 interviews with people who have had a great impact on the history of Houston or witnessed major events that have taken place in our city. In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, we are featuring Houston vocalists and musicians who made a significant impact in Houston's jazz scene. Check out their stories below!

:
Arnett Cobb, a saxophonist and band leader, started playing music professionally in the 1930s. After playing with several groups including Lionel Hampton's, he formed his own band in 1947. In this interview Cobb answers questions about the business component of his career. He also talks about his national and international tours, the people he met, and the artists with whom he played.

Ed Gerlach

Abstract
:
Ed Gerlach began playing piano at the age of 5 before switching his focus to soprano saxophone and later tenor saxophone. Gerlach discusses his career as a saxophonist, including his time with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. Gerlach also share his stories of meeting contemporary celebrities and musicians.

:
Conrad Johnson talks with David Goldstein about his career as a musician and music educator in Houston. Conrad was a proficient jazz musician. His high school orchestra at Kashmere High School where he taught for many years won numerous awards. He was admitted to the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame in 2000.
