Rodriguez (District I) is hosting a Freedman's Town/4th Ward Community Meeting Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. at the Allen Parkway Village Community Center, 1600Allen Parkway. Several topics of concern to the community will be discussed during this meeting. Council Member Rodriguez has invited representatives of the Houston Public Library to make a presentation about the African American Library at the Gregory School, an exciting, long anticipated project in 4thWard. , Slated to open in early 2009, the African American Library at the Gregory School will be the third major research library and special collection to be established and operated by the Houston Public Library. Located in historic Freedman's Town at 1300 Victor Street, the library will be housed in the Edgar M. Gregory School, the first public school for African Americans in Houston. The building, which is an archeological landmark in Texas, will be completely restored. The library will be dedicated to documenting and preserving the traditions, culture and history of the African American experience in the greater Houston area. The Library's presentation during the meeting will include a virtual tour of the facility, project timeline, public safety and community concerns, planned programs and services, and ways you can donate materials to the archival collection.
