Joseph Matthew Heiser was a well-known Houston naturalist who served in both World Wars and worked as an accountant for the Texas Company. Nature and preservation of the environment were his primary interests, and he founded the Outdoor Nature Club of Houston in 1923. Mr. Heiser was also an avid fan of the circus and amassed a large collection of memorabilia related to circuses in Houston and across the country. A significant portion of his collection contains over 800 circus posters dating from the 1890s onward. These large, full-color lithographic posters provide a window into Americana and entertainment in the early twentieth century.
